Arsenal Football Club, nicknamed “The Gunners”, was founded in 1886 by workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory, originally known as Dial Square. The club moved from Woolwich to North London in 1913, settling at the famous Highbury stadium until relocating to the Emirates Stadium in 2006. Arsenal have played in England’s top football division since 1919, boasting the longest uninterrupted run at this level in English football.
Arsenal is among England’s most successful clubs, winning 13 league titles and a record 14 FA Cups. The club became especially prominent in the 1930s under manager Herbert Chapman and further cemented its legacy during Arsène Wenger’s era (1996–2018), which included an unbeaten league season in 2003–04, earning the nickname ‘The Invincibles’. Arsenal’s fierce rivalry with nearby Tottenham Hotspur is showcased in the renowned North London Derby.
