Mateta strikes gold for Crystal Palace in Leipzig

The fairy tale is complete. Crystal Palace defeated Spanish side Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League Final at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Wednesday night, lifting a historic continental trophy at the very first attempt.

It was an evening of pure emotion, maximum drama, and the absolute perfect farewell for manager Oliver Glasner.

The match began as a highly-tense, cagey affair, with both teams visibly feeling the immense pressure of their first-major European final.

Palace missed a glorious chance just before half time when Tyrick Mitchell sent a diving header agonizingly wide from an Adam Wharton cross.

The definitive, history-making moment arrived in the 51st minute. The exceptionally-gifted Adam Wharton drove forward from midfield and unleashed a stinging, low drive.

Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla could only parry the ball directly into the path of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who reacted with clinical, lightning-fast instincts to smash the ball into the back of the net.

Palace nearly doubled their lead in bizarre fashion moments later when a brilliant Yéremy Pino free-kick struck both posts before bouncing clear.

Despite a late, desperate surge from Rayo Vallecano, the Eagles’ backline stood entirely firm to secure the clean sheet and ignite unadulterated chaos in the traveling Palace end.

The victory marks a beautifully-poetic end to Oliver Glasner’s legendary tenure in South London. When the Austrian took over in February 2024, Crystal Palace were languishing in 15th place, flirting heavily with a relegation dogfight.

He departs the club this summer having completely transformed their identity, delivering an unprecedented three trophies in just 12 months – FA Cup (May 2025), Community Shield (August 2025), UEFA Conference League (May 2026).

“He has got to be one of the best managers Palace has ever had,” a beaming Adam Wharton told reporters on the pitch.

“The first three trophies in the history of the club, our first European competition, and we won it. The difference he has made is just incredible.”

An emotional captain, Dean Henderson, hoisted the silverware high into the German night sky, celebrating the club’s 60th match of a grueling, marathon campaign.

“These are special moments with special people,” Henderson said. “It is a fairy tale.

“The manager has been incredible and deserves this exact send-off. This is exactly how the story should have ended.”
