After Marc Cucurella completed his transfer to European giants Real Madrid on Monday, in a deal worth up to £51.8 million including add-ons, Chelsea are already preparing to replace him.
Cucurella left Stamford Bridge after four years at the club, having initially joined from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022.
During his tenure at Stamford Bridge, he made 163 appearances across all competitions and helped the Blues lift both the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
His departure was heavily-driven by a strong desire to return to Spain, and negotiations progressed rapidly once Real Madrid formalised their interest.
The significant financial windfall from the sale provides a massive boost to incoming manager Xabi Alonso, who is scheduled to officially start his new role on July 1.
Chelsea officials intend to add the recouped funds directly to the existing summer transfer budget. Rather than signing numerous squad players, the hierarchy are on the look out for two new signings who can hit the ground running.
With Cucurella gone, 20-year-old Jorell Hato remains the only senior left-back in the current squad, though his ability to cover central defence is highly valued by the recruitment team.
Chelsea have already initiated searches for an elite left-sided defender to fill the void, whilst also prioritising a central midfielder and a winger to ensure Alonso has a squad capable of competing for silverware next season.
