Alejandro Garnacho settles extra time thriller for Chelsea

Chelsea survived a major scare against Championship side Wrexham to book their place in the FA Cup quarter finals with a 4-2 victory after extra time.

The Blues twice fell behind in a pulsating encounter at the SToK Cae Ras before Alejandro Garnacho struck six minutes into the additional period to finally put the visitors ahead.

A late goal from Joao Pedro added gloss to the scoreline after Wrexham had a potential equaliser ruled out for offside in the dying moments. The result keeps Chelsea’s hopes of domestic silverware alive in what has been a turbulent season for the London club.

Wrexham, cheered on by owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were inches away from one of the greatest upsets in modern cup history. They led 1-0 and 2-1 during regular time, exploiting defensive lapses in the Chelsea backline.

Sam Smith was a constant threat for the hosts, scoring the opening goal and providing the cross for their second. Chelsea’s equaliser to make it 2-2 came late in the game through Josh Acheampong, who found the net from a tight angle to force the extra period.

In extra time, the superior fitness and technical ability of the Premier League side began to show. Garnacho’s volley was a highlight of the match, showcasing the individual talent that has made him a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being reduced to ten men after a red card for their captain, Wrexham refused to go quietly and thought they had made it 3-3 before the assistant referee’s flag intervened.

This win will provide a significant morale boost for Enzo Maresca’s side as they look to finish the season strongly.
