Fulham Football Club, founded in 1879, is London’s oldest professional football club. Originally established as Fulham St Andrew’s Church Sunday School FC by church members, the club adopted the name Fulham FC in 1888. They began playing at their iconic home, Craven Cottage, in 1896. Fulham turned professional in 1898 and joined the Southern League’s second division the same year, winning promotion to the Southern League first division by 1903. Since 1903, they have famously worn white shirts and black shorts.
The club entered the Football League Second Division in 1907 and experienced fluctuating fortunes in the top tiers over the decades. Highlights include winning the Southern League in 1905-06 and 1906-07, reaching the 1975 FA Cup Final, and competing in the UEFA Europa League final in 2010.
In 1997, Mohamed Al-Fayed’s takeover marked a revival as Fulham climbed from lower divisions to establish themselves in the Premier League. After his tenure, Shahid Khan became owner, with the club experiencing several promotions and relegations between top divisions before stabilising in the Premier League from 2022 onward. Fulham has local rivalries with Chelsea, Brentford, and Queens Park Rangers and remains a historic, community-rooted club based in West London’s Fulham area.
