Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s title ambitions have been dealt a fresh blow with the news that Kai Havertz has been sidelined with a muscular problem.
The German international, who had only recently returned from a long-term knee injury, is expected to miss tonight’s London derby with Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The setback is particularly frustrating for the Gunners, as Havertz had been in excellent form since his return, providing a vital focal point for the attack in the absence of other key personnel.
The injury list at the Emirates is becoming a significant concern for the league leaders. Captain Martin Odegaard and talismanic winger Bukayo Saka are both currently managing fitness issues, while Mikel Merino remains out following foot surgery.
Arteta remained coy on the availability of his star playmakers during his pre-match press conference, simply stating that the medical team would evaluate them before kick-off.
With an FA Cup tie against Wigan and a looming North London derby against Tottenham, Arsenal’s squad depth is being tested to the absolute limit at a critical juncture of the campaign.
