Macclesfield stun holders Crystal Palace in historic FA Cup upset

In what is being described as the biggest shock in FA Cup history, sixth-tier Macclesfield defeated holders Crystal Palace 2-1 at Moss Rose on Saturday.

The National League North side, managed by Wayne Rooney’s brother John, overcame a gap of 117 places in the football pyramid to dump out the reigning champions.

Goals from Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts secured the improbable victory, leaving Palace manager Oliver Glasner speechless.

“I have no words for this performance,” he said. “It’s not just losing, it’s creating almost no chances.

“It was really hard to watch, there was no physical presence, no kind of quality in our attack. This is what makes it so disappointing.”

The defeat marks a historic low for the Eagles, who paraded the trophy at Wembley just eight months ago.

For Macclesfield, the “Silkmen” have secured their place in folklore, with Rooney hailing the result as a “dream that shouldn’t have been possible.”
