Michael Carrick prepares for Manchester Derby debut as interim boss

Club legend Michael Carrick has officially begun his tenure as Manchester United’s interim manager, with his first test coming against Manchester City this Saturday.

Manchester United have turned to a familiar face to navigate the remainder of the 2025-26 season following the mid-season departure of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick, who previously enjoyed a successful caretaker spell and a managerial stint at Middlesbrough, was formally appointed earlier this week.

In his first address to the squad at Carrington, Carrick emphasized the need to restore the high standards associated with the club.

He will be supported by a coaching staff including Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate as they prepare for a high-stakes debut at Old Trafford.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture, as United sit seventh in the Premier League and face their local rivals, Manchester City, in a match that could define their pursuit of a Champions League spot.

Carrick has inherited a squad that struggled for consistency under the previous regime but remains confident in the talent at his disposal.

Reports suggest the board will not sanction major January signings, placing the responsibility on Carrick to maximize the potential of the existing squad.
