Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is dealing with a selection headache after Dominik Szoboszlai joined a lengthy injury list for the trip to Sunderland.
Defeat to Manchester City on Sunday was compounded by the dismissal of Szoboszlai, who will now serve a suspension.
Slot confirmed today that he is facing a “heightened selection crisis” at right-back, with Szoboszlai having filled in for the injured Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, and Joe Gomez.
With all three frontline options still sidelined, the Reds may be forced to turn to veteran midfielder Wataru Endo or youngster Calvin Ramsay for Wednesday’s clash at the Stadium of Light.
Slot provided a bleak update on Joe Gomez, noting that while the defender’s injury is not serious, he is unlikely to return in time for the midweek fixture.
Frimpong is also expected to be out for several more weeks.
The manager admitted that the current situation is “not ideal” as Liverpool look to bounce back from their Anfield disappointment.
After losing a lead against City, Slot is under pressure to find a defensive solution that can contain a Sunderland side eager to exploit Liverpool’s makeshift backline.
