Andoni Iraola has made it clear that Liverpool’s preparations for the new Premier League season will be built around intensity, urgency and relentless work ethic.
The Spaniard has been heard repeatedly urging his players to move quicker during training sessions in Chicago, shouting “Faster, faster!” as he looks to implement the high-energy style that earned him success before arriving at Anfield.
With less than three weeks until Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign, Iraola knows there is little time to waste. The Reds remain without a host of first-team players because of injuries and extended breaks following this summer’s World Cup, leaving the head coach to rely on several academy prospects during training and pre-season fixtures.
“It’s impossible to have everyone available at the moment,” Iraola admitted. “We have to work with the players we have here and make sure everyone is ready when the season starts.”
One of the biggest concerns is at centre-back, where injuries have left Virgil van Dijk as the only experienced option available for much of pre-season. Teenagers Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe have both been handed valuable opportunities in pre-season friendlies, although Iraola accepts the circumstances are far from ideal.
Despite those defensive issues, there is optimism surrounding several of Liverpool’s summer arrivals. Florian Wirtz has been used in an advanced central role behind the striker, while Alexander Isak is expected to feature more prominently as he continues building fitness.
“We want Florian playing where he can influence the game the most,” Iraola explained. “He’s a player who can create chances and make the difference close to goal.”
Liverpool also remain active in the transfer market as they seek further reinforcements before the window closes. Additional defensive cover and attacking options are both under consideration, while uncertainty remains over the futures of several established squad members.
For now, however, Iraola’s focus remains firmly on the training pitch. Every session is another opportunity to embed his ideas and ensure Liverpool hit the ground running when the Premier League season gets under way later this month.
