Southampton reject opening £20m Leeds United offer for Shea Charles

Southampton have rejected an opening transfer offer from Leeds United worth approximately £20m for defensive midfielder Shea Charles.

The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international has quickly caught the attention of a host of clubs ahead of the new campaign.

Leeds entered the summer transfer window with a clear mandate to bolster their central midfield options following their successful survival campaign in the top flight last season, identifying Charles as an ideal long-term structural addition.

However, the Saints have knocked back the initial opening package without hesitation, indicating that they value the young midfielder at nearer to £30m.

The situation is further complicated by developing reports that Manchester United are keeping a very close eye on the outcome of these negotiations.

The Red Devils are actively scouring the market for younger midfield profiles under their recruitment structure, and Charles is an incredibly attractive option.

The young midfielder has already amassed an impressive 35 senior international appearances for Northern Ireland, showcasing the discipline and maturity under high pressure needed outside of the standard club environment.

Southampton are under no immediate financial pressure to sell their asset below their valuation, meaning Leeds United will now need to decide whether to return with an improved second financial package or shift their attention toward alternative targets.
