Erling Haaland saves Manchester City title hopes at Anfield

Erling Haaland’s 93rd-minute penalty secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback for Manchester City against Liverpool, preventing Arsenal from moving nine points clear.

The Premier League title race took another sensational turn on Sunday as City clawed back from the brink of a devastating defeat.

Liverpool appeared to have handed the advantage to leaders Arsenal when Dominik Szoboszlai fired home a breathtaking long-range free kick in the 74th minute.

However, the champions showed their resilience in the closing stages. Bernardo Silva equalised in the 84th minute, sliding in to convert Haaland’s cushioned header, before the Norwegian striker snatched the victory from the penalty spot after Alisson Becker fouled Matheus Nunes in stoppage time.

The match ended in chaos as Szoboszlai was sent off following a VAR review for a professional foul on Haaland during a bizarre sequence where both players chased a goal-bound shot from Rayan Cherki.

The win is City’s first in front of a crowd at Anfield since 2003 and keeps them six points behind Arsenal, who had earlier beaten Sunderland 3-0.

For Liverpool, the result is a bitter pill to swallow, leaving them in sixth place and five points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots.

Pep Guardiola hailed the win as “huge” for their pursuit of a fifth consecutive title.
