FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off tonight in Mexico City

The historic, newly-expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup officially gets underway this evening.

Co-hosts Mexico will have the ultimate honour of opening the tournament on home soil as they face South Africa in the opening Group A match at the iconic Mexico City Stadium, with kickoff at 8pm BST.

This tournament marks a monumental shift in the football landscape, expanding from 32 to 48 nations split across 12 groups of four.

Fans will witness an unprecedented 104 matches over 39 days, culminating in the final on Sunday 19 July in New York.
