Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick provided a rare piece of positive news for the Red Devils, by confirming that Mason Mount has resumed full group training.
The midfielder has been absent since Carrick’s first game in charge – a 2-0 derby win over Man City – but is now in contention to face Aston Villa on Sunday.
Carrick described Mount’s return as a “big step” for the squad as they look to consolidate their position in the Champions League qualification places following a narrow 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United last weekend.
United are currently navigating a defensive transition, with Noussair Mazraoui expected to play despite a minor knock, while Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez remain on the treatment table.
In an interesting turn of events, Carrick also praised the “fantastic” form of Harry Maguire, who is reportedly in talks over a new contract with a reduced salary to stay at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s opponents Aston Villa are facing their own selection dilemmas. Unai Emery has confirmed that Matty Cash faces a late fitness test, though captain John McGinn is back in the fold following a two-month layoff.
