Newcastle reject £80m Tottenham bid for Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United have sent a clear message to their Premier League rivals by immediately rejecting an opening transfer bid from Tottenham Hotspur worth approximately £80m for Sandro Tonali.

The Italian international midfielder has become a primary target for several top clubs this summer, with Spurs manager Roberto de Zerbi understood to have designated his compatriot as an absolute priority signing ahead of the new campaign.

Despite Tottenham making a massive financial opening offer earlier this week, the Magpies knocked back the approach without hesitation, reiterating their desire to keep hold of their core stars unless an extraordinary valuation is met.

Tonali still has three years remaining on his current contract at St James’ Park, with Newcastle holding a club option to extend the deal by an additional year, placing the Tyneside club in an incredibly strong negotiating position.

The 26-year-old originally signed from AC Milan three years ago in a deal worth £55m and has since developed into a crucial component of Eddie Howe’s tactical setup.

While Newcastle are under pressure to manage their finances carefully to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability guidelines, they value Tonali immensely and are reluctant to lose his leadership and tactical awareness.

Tottenham are not the only club monitoring the situation closely, as reigning champions Manchester City are also believed to be credited with a strong interest in the Italian midfielder as they look to refresh their own central options following some high-profile departures.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will return with an improved second offer that tests Newcastle’s resolve, or if they will shift their attention fully toward other targets like West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes.
