Newcastle sign Pope

Newcastle United have signed Nick Pope from newly-relegated Burnley.

The England international goalkeeper moves to St James’ Park on a four-year contract after spending six seasons at Turf Moor.

“Now I’m here, I can’t wait to get started,” said the 30-year-old.

“The deal has taken a couple of weeks to come to fruition, but it got over the line really quickly and I’m delighted to be here and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into it.”

Despite last season’s big-money takeover, Eddie Howe shrewdly continues to handpick value-for-money homegrown talent and Pope is no exception.

“An exceptional Premier League and international-level goalkeeper,” said the Newcastle boss.

“I’m very pleased to be adding strong competition to a very important position.”
