Tottenham Hotspur pause sporting director search

Tottenham Hotspur have officially placed their search for a new permanent sporting director on hold until the conclusion of the summer transfer window, choosing instead to focus their full operational energy on backing head coach Roberto de Zerbi in the market.

The decision was confirmed by chief executive Vinai Venkatesham during the publication of the latest Fan Advisory Board meeting minutes, with the club expressing absolute confidence in their existing recruitment staff.

“The club has confidence in our people, but if we find someone who can complement our existing team and make it better, we will do that at the right time, and in a summer window is not that time,” said Venkatesham.

“No-one has been in a process and turned us down. Many names in the media linked with us, we have never even spoken to.”

This operational shift leaves director of football operations Rafi Moersen, Johan Lange, and De Zerbi to completely steer the club’s summer transfer activity.

The decision to prioritise squad reinforcement has already yielded significant success, with Spurs swiftly concluding early deals for free agents Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi alongside a £52m transfer for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

De Zerbi has been granted substantial funds by the board to completely overhaul a squad that narrowly avoided a catastrophic relegation scenario last season, with the Italian tactician now pushing heavily to secure marquee midfield signings like Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes before pre-season training camps open in July.
