Brentford close in on Callum Wilson

Brentford are on the verge of completing a significant piece of summer business by securing the signature of former England international Callum Wilson on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old striker is currently a free agent after his contract with West Ham expired at the end of June, following a difficult campaign that culminated in the Hammers’ relegation from the top flight.

Despite a modest return of seven goals last term, Wilson’s proven track record in the Premier League has ensured he remains in demand.

Scottish giants Celtic had shown substantial interest in the forward during the January transfer window, with their management keen to inject some experienced firepower into their frontline.

However, a move north of the border failed to materialise at the time, leaving the path clear for Brentford to move quickly this summer.

The Bees have offered Wilson a one-year deal to keep him in the Premier League. The move is viewed as a calculated gamble by the club, who want to add reliable cover and veteran leadership to their attacking ranks.

Wilson will primarily compete with and support Brazilian forward Igor Thiago, who recently represented his country at the World Cup.

With pre-season training already under way, the club hopes to finalise the medical examinations and formal paperwork over the coming days.

If the deal goes through as expected, Wilson’s immense experience built during successful stints at Bournemouth and Newcastle United will provide the squad with a major boost as they prepare for another demanding year in the top flight of English football.
