Bournemouth have continued an ambitious summer in the transfer market by completing the signing of Portugal defender António Silva from Benfica.
The 22-year-old arrives at the Vitality Stadium for a reported fee of around £26 million, becoming one of the Cherries’ most significant acquisitions as they prepare for a campaign that includes Europa League football for the first time in the club’s history.
Silva joins with an impressive pedigree despite his age. Having made more than 230 appearances for Benfica, he established himself as one of the leading young defenders in Europe and was named the Primeira Liga Defender of the Year during Benfica’s title-winning 2022-23 campaign. He also played his part in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph last season.
Bournemouth’s President of Football Operations, Tiago Pinto, believes the club have secured one of the continent’s outstanding defensive talents.
“António is a player with exceptional quality and experience for someone so young,” Pinto said.
“He has already performed at the highest level with Benfica and for Portugal, and we believe he has all the attributes to become an important player for Bournemouth.”
Silva is expected to fill the void left by Marcos Senesi, who departed earlier this summer, while also providing leadership to a back line preparing for the demands of competing on both domestic and European fronts.
With Manchester City awaiting on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, he could be handed an immediate opportunity to demonstrate why Bournemouth were prepared to invest heavily in his services.
Supporters will hope his arrival is another sign that the club intends to compete rather than simply make up the numbers during what promises to be a landmark campaign.
